Diatom Sculpture Series

A MONUMENT TO DIATOMS

Inspired by microscopic life forms from the marine environment that surrounds Bay Farm Island, the Diatom Sculpture Series public artwork brings a monumental physical presence to diatoms. Diatoms make up one of the greatest biomasses on the planet and produce up to 50% of Earth’s oxygen, yet few people are aware of their existence, let alone their immensely beautiful and diverse cellular structures made from silica. Living in both marine and freshwater environments across the globe, they are invisible to the naked eye, yet when they accumulate, their massive blooms can be seen from space. Diatoms are useful in studying water ecosystems and climate change as they are nutrient absorbers and are highly sensitive to temperature.

The series of eight unique steel sculptures reveal the variety and beauty of these fascinating microscopic creatures at a human scale, inviting the public to think deeply about the wonders of diatoms, and raising awareness and appreciation for diatoms and the important role they play in the surrounding environment.
