Dérive / Drift

Inspired by the immensely beautiful undulating patterns seen in ocean currents and water flows, Dérive is an interpretation of the fluid motion of the sea as a hand carved wood sculpture that hangs above your head. Mapped data showing the velocity and direction of the ocean’s currents off the coast of San Francisco Bay were sourced from Ocean Surface Current Analyses Real-time (OSCAR), a NASA funded research project and global surface current database, and visualized by Null School. Adrien Segal is an artist and writer based in Oakland, California. Drawing from landscape, science, history, emotion, and perception, her interdisciplinary work bridges the gap between scientific rationality and the emotional nature of human experience.
